AT&T Offering $450 Incentive to T-Mobile Customers May Not Be As Good As It Sounds

So what is AT&T doing to deflect the surge in customers signing up with T-Mobile? Offering a $200 bill credit and $250 device credit. But double check before you get too excited about leaving T-Mobile for this incentive from AT&T.

First of all, the handset you select is sold at full retail. So an iPhone could cost you upwards of $600 – $250 is still $350, so beware.
Second, be sure that the plan you signup for on AT&T is equal to what you have currently with T-Mobile.
Thirdly, be sure that the service is what AT&T claims. AT&T is notoriously bad about claiming service everywhere but not delivering. I was a customer with AT&T Wireless and gave up after years of fighting and waiting for service to improve. Years of dropped calls and no service or poor service will convince you of this.

Anyway, it could be a good deal for you, but double check before jumping ship. Things could also get more interesting as T-Mobile is about to release some even better pricing plans for those with 2-3 lines on a family plan.

It is expected that T-Mobile will also be offering incentives to those on AT&T and Verizon in contract, by paying termination fees.

T-Mobile is heating the subscriber acquisition growing my over 1 million subscribers in the last quarter, although the 45 million subscribers is about half of Verizon or AT&T, it is in contrast to the 360,000 customers leaving Sprint. Sprint as we know is in serious trouble, and has been acquired by SoftBank, none of which has helped the carrier out of what appears to be a downward spiral, although Sprint stock is up.

New Year = New Venture? Explore best place for start-ups next Saturday

Where should you build your startup?

Do You REALLY Need to be in the Bay Area?

Map of Southern California startups courtesy of

 Baxter Lecture Hall, Caltech

Registration and Continental Breakfast: 8:00 a.m.
Program: 9:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

Southern California’s startup community has come a long waybut has it fully emerged from the Bay Area’s shadow? Although companies, such as Cornerstone OnDemand, Snapchat and Maker Studios, grab headlines,

the engine of this community is comprised of hundreds of entrepreneurs quietly building products and services that soon will disrupt established industries. A vibrant community of mentors, investors, accelerators and events has emerged to support these entrepreneurs and their companies.
Yet, the allure of the Bay Area still beckons companies to move north.

In this very unique program, we will bring together local and SF-based entrepreneurs to discuss the resources in their startup communities that made a difference in building their companies.  Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the speakers and ask questions about how to build a successful company in Southern California.

This program is designed for entrepreneurs, VCs, angel investors, advisors, strategic partners, service professionals and vendors in the startup community.  Key Questions we will seek to answer are:

  • Do you need to relocate to the Bay Area to raise money?
  • Can you access the Bay Area’s benefits while remaining in Southern California?
  • What resources are unique to Southern California that startups can access today?
  • What has worked and what hasn’t for SF’s startup community and how can we apply those lessons here?

New Gift Card Scam Beware

If you received a gift card this holiday season, then you should be aware that crooks are using new scams to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.

The perpetrators take pictures of the gift cards before they are sold, then ping the card for activation. Once active they use the available credit unsuspecting to the real owner of the card. Then when the owner goes to use the card there is no available credit and because most of us wait weeks or months to use the cards, we assume that we used the cards.

Use the gift cards as soon as possible and make sure to check the cards balance and make a note of your purchases so as if you run into an issue you can prove to the company you did not make the purchases.

Du-par’s Opens Restaurant in Pasadena – Hamburger Hamlet Closes

Du-par’s Opens Restaurant in Pasadena – Hamburger Hamlet Closes

Hamburger Hamlet closes Pasadena location and set to open as Du-par’s.

The signage and display cases are going in as of this afternoon. We will ask about outdoor seating which would be a welcomed addition in the area.

The current banners shows that this location will be open 24 hours! No other restaurant is opened 24 hours in this area.

Biff Naylor owner if Du-pars is on hand to welcome Pasadena to the newest location taking over where Hamburger Hamlet has served for some 46 years!

Pasadena Now – Eddie Rivera sites with Biff Naylor to gather some details on how the transition from Hamburger Hamlet took place. Just to think that the space could have possibly been left vacant.

Du-par’s Restaurant & Bakery
214 S. Lake Ave.

The Pasadena Hamburger Hamlet has struggled with this location for the past several years, even scoring poorly with the Pasadena Health Department.

One good note is that the entire Hamburger Hamlet staff will stay on to work at the new Du-pars location. Very little will be changed except for the name, even the phone number is staying the same.

Training will take place and the location will open as Du-Pars.

SnapChat hacked 4.6 Million User Emails and Phones On Internet Check Yours

With the ever increasing incidents of websites being hacked consumers need to use extra caution to protect themselves.

Check to see if your email or phone was hacked at

Gibson Security, the firm that warned Snapchat of the security vulnerability on Christmas Day, has created a site, – – that lets users type in their username to see if their phone number was among those leaked.

The website allows anyone to simply grab either as a SQL dump or a CSV text file information.

What can you do? Use extra caution, possibly use different emails for services, or include an appended code to your email for instance, [email protected] would work.  Then that email can be filtered independently.
