A Ticket To Explore JPL – 2016 #jplopenhouse @NASAJPL

Listen up, Space Fans!

JPL is announcing a new approach to that one special weekend a year when we open our doors to the public and put on display all the ways we are exploring the solar system and beyond.

It’s called “A Ticket to Explore JPL.” And to be a part of it, you MUST have a ticket. We’re trying this new approach because the enormous public response to our traditional “come one, come all” “Open House,” has been – well – overwhelming. We’re committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience, so we’re trying this experiment.

“A Ticket to Explore JPL” will take place the weekend of June 4th and 5th. Tickets are free but limited and they will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. The maximum number of tickets per family is five. And to enter JPL you must have your ticket in hand and with a matching ID if you are 18 or older. Tickets are not transferrable.

Tickets will be available as of April 25 at 9 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on JPL’s Special Events web page ( https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/special-events.php) where you can also find additional information.

Hope to see you at A Ticket to Explore JPL, but remember make sure you have a ticket.

Altadena Library – The Art and Delight of Water Harvesting w/Leigh Adams

“THE ART AND DELIGHT OF WATER HARVESTING” WITH LEIGH ADAMS

ALTADENA — Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 P.M. in the Barbara J. Pearson Community Room of the Main Library.

Please join us for an invigorating evening with local artist, educator, and water conservationist, Leigh Adams.

Leigh has reconfigured her Altadena yard to capture and hold as much water as possible. She utilized resourceful measures to turn an arid hillside into an oasis of fruit trees, herbs, and edibles. Leigh will explain water capturing techniques you can try at home; such as bioswales, hugelkultur, French drains, grey water, and more. She will also speak of conservation measures that have worked for her…and the enjoyment she has experienced along the way.

Leigh Adams’ love of art and children and her commitment to doing public art with children have resulted in a variety of differing art installations and activities.  Although most of her work is done in the Pasadena, California area, Leigh has traveled and worked with children in Mexico, China and Central America for many years.

Whether teaching folk arts, language or life skills, Leigh believes that cooperative learning, achieving consensus and building new skills (which can result in public acknowledgement) are some of the greatest gifts we can give our children and our society. She currently is active as artist in residence and teacher at several local schools.

As arts become less and less available in our schools, Leigh believes it is incumbent upon us to make opportunities for hands-on learning available to our young people.  Public installations are an excellent way to elevate children’s belief in themselves, their self worth and the value of their efforts.

Currently Artist in Residence at the LA County Arboretum, she completed a 960′ mosaicked “DreamSnake” using tiles glazed by children at the Arboretum and at area schools, colleges and clubs. Leigh is available for garden design and commissioned work. She is also developing Crescent Farms as a demonstration garden for the LA Arboretum.

Tesla Model 3 Pre-Orders At 200,000 Stock Up @teslamotors

Tesla has just made history with the first ever pre-order of a vehicle being ordered by many sight unseen.

Close to 200,000 people have plunked down $1,000 for a vehicle that will cost a minimum of $35,000 and will hopefully be available late 2017.

There are some very impressive stats and some who are naysayers of what Tesla is doing. But Tesla is redefining the auto industry.

It would be interesting to see if Chevy with the upcoming Bolt release takes a similar tactic with pre-orders.  I doubt that Chevy will garner even half the pre-orders the Tesla has managed to score in less than 24 hours since the online ordering went live.  We could see the number of pre-orders break the half a million mark in the coming weeks or even days if the media runs with the story and it goes mainstream.

There are some very interesting development that could make the Model 3 a real winner without cannibalizing the other models as many have speculated.  Although the Model 3 is the low end of the Tesla line it is by no means a low end vehicle.  It will compete squarely against similarly priced vehicles from BMW and Mercedes.

The Model 3 will end most hopes the Nissan LEAF has to survive in the EV market, and if the Model 3 doesn’t end them, then the Chevy Bolt will.

The Fremont, CA plant Tesla owns is capable of producing 500,000 vehicles per year.  This sort of volume production would put Tesla squarely up against larger auto companies.

At the core of the Tesla vehicles is the battery packs, which will be produced at the currently in construction Gigafactory 1, located in Nevada.  Production is slated to being this year.  The capability of this plant will exceed worldwide production of 2013.
