CUIL Launches

Cuil

Cuil is a stealth search engine startup which claims that it can index web pages significantly faster and cheaper than Google. Cuill has told potential investors that their indexing costs will be 1/10th of Google’s, based on new search architectures and relevance methods. In some ways Cuill is the polar opposite of Powerset, which has huge indexing costs because it does a deep contextual analysis on every sentence on every web page. Powerset’s indexing costs, therefore, should be much higher per web page than Google’s.

Cuil was also founded by highly respected search experts. Husband and wife team Tom Costello and Anna Patterson were joined by Russell Power. Patterson and Power are ex-Google search experts. Costello was the founder of Xift.

Cuil met with venture capitalists, but we’re hearing that Costello and Patterson eventually self-funded the company with a $5ish million injection of capital. They now have 10-15 employees and an office in Menlo Park.

Welcome to Cuil—the world’s biggest search engine. The Internet has grown. We think it’s time search did too.

The Internet has grown exponentially in the last fifteen years but search engines have not kept up—until now. Cuil searches more pages on the Web than anyone else—three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.

Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.

Then we offer you helpful choices and suggestions until you find the page you want and that you know is out there. We believe that analyzing the Web rather than our users is a more useful approach, so we don’t collect data about you and your habits, lest we are tempted to peek. With Cuil, your search history is always private.

Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge. For knowledge, ask Cuil.

Sunday Activities

This morning I played golf with my cousin Fernando Caballero at Arroyou Seco. There was a 30 minute wait to get on, once we started we moved along pretty good, took about 2.5 hours to play.

I had one birdie and the rest bogies or pars and a couple double bogies.

After playing golf we wanted to get some breakfast, so we went over to Marstons. It was packed, there must have been 30+ people waiting. Funny because an hour before I called and they told me the wait was about 20min, they must have been slammed.

So we decided to go to Glendale and have breakfast at Shaker’s. Pretty good place, except there was a dead pigeon in the parking lot.

After we ate breakfast Fernando dropped me back at my car in Pasadena. Then I took a walk to the Paseo and walked around and stopped in at the DeVine Wine, Pasadena Wine Cellar. They are having a sale this weekend. $10 /bottle any wine. So I bought three bottles. A Chard, Blanc, and Merlot.

Jennifer Caballero is now back from her trip to Monterey where she had her high school reunion. Seems like they had a good time.

I’ll be posting pictures online I’m sure. Stay tunned.

Tonight we are getting together with Kerry Bradley for dinner, most likely going to Margarita Jones in Pasadena.

scan digital photo scanning service

ScanDigital converts old photos to digital format. Customers send in their loose snapshots or albums, and the company scans and color-corrects them. The photos are given a permanent online home on the company’s photo sharing site, to which customers can upload additional images.

The story:

ScanDigital began with a simple question from the mother of one of our founders. It was the 2006 holiday season and Mike Mothner was at home opening presents with his family. This year the gift that was the biggest hit was the digital camera Mike gave his mother. The wrapping paper hadn’t even hit the floor before she was busy lining the Mothner family up for picture after picture. Mike’s mom was thrilled at just how easy her new digital camera was to use, and by the time she had downloaded all her photos on to the computer she was hooked. Mike’s mom had officially gone digital. Later that night as the family sat down for dinner, a thought occurred to Mrs. Mothner. She turned to Mike and simply asked, “so how do I put all the photos in the garage on my computer?”

Little did she know it, but with that innocent question she planted the seed that would become ScanDigital, Mike started searching the internet for a company that would provide quality digitization services for a fair price. Mike knew he didn’t want to send his mom’s photo out of the country, but was unable to find a stateside company that could deliver the level of service he wanted for a reasonable price. The more Mike looked into it, the more he started thinking that there must be plenty of moms, dads and countless others who were also facing the dilemma of what to do with their old photos, slides and negatives.

Several days later at a New Year’s Eve party in San Diego, Mike approached his long-time friend and soon to be co-founder Anderson Schoenrock. Anderson listened as Mike explained the problem his mom faced in converting her photos to digital and how there just wasn’t service that combined value, security and high quality. As the two discussed it, something clicked. It was just one of those moments; both Anderson and Mike they were onto something big. Right there on the balcony of the Torrey Pines Hilton, the two began laying the groundwork for ScanDigital.

Getting ScanDigital up and running was no easy feat. The hours were long and work was hard, but both Mike and Anderson knew they were creating a truly unique service. Within three months, they had developed a business plan and hired programmers to build the web site and general infrastructure. About six months after their initial discussion, Mike and Anderson officially launched ScanDigital to the public.

Today, ScanDigital is the premier photo digitization service. Its industry leading innovations have created the most user-friendly process available. Combining tremendous value with an impeccable service, ScanDigital is poised to lead the digital conversion revolution. All thanks to Mike’s mom.

Hawaiian Airlines Visa Credit Card

July 25, 2008

Aloha ,

Hawaiian Airlines today issued a public alert to warn of a fraudulent email being circulated. The email is labeled “Your airplane ticket.” It appears as a notice of a new ticketing service and informs the recipient that a new account has been opened in their name and a ticket has been charged to their credit card.

The email contains an attachment designed to look like an electronic ticket, but instead is contaminated with a virus.

The email also contains references to login, password and credit card information, which Hawaiian would never include in an email to customers unless it’s requested.

This email is not linked to Hawaiian in any way. We just want to warn everyone that it does contain a virus and our advice is not to open the attachment and to delete the email from your inbox.

Mahalo,

Rick Peterson

Yahoo Music Store Closing

Here’s the letter to Yahoo Music subscribers, what’s next.

Here’s the email Yahoo! Music sent out to customers last night:

———————————————–
The Yahoo! Music Store, along with the ability to purchase and download
single songs and albums, will no longer be available as of September 30,
2008.

Songs and albums that were purchased through the Yahoo! Music Unlimited
Store are protected by a digital rights management system that requires a
valid license key before they can be played on your computer.

After the Store closes, Yahoo! will no longer be able to support the
retrieval of license keys for music purchased from Yahoo! Music Unlimited,
and Yahoo! will no longer be able to authorize song playback on additional
computers.

After September 30, 2008, you will not be able to transfer songs to
unauthorized computers or re-license these songs after changing operating
systems. Please note that your purchased tracks will generally continue to
play on your existing authorized computers unless there is a change to the
computer’s operating system.

For any user who purchased tracks through Yahoo! Music Unlimited, we highly
recommend that you back up the purchased tracks to an audio CD before the
closing of the Store on September 30, 2008. Backing up your music to an
audio CD will allow you to copy the music back to your computer again if the
license keys for your original music files cannot be retrieved.

For further information on the closing of the Yahoo! Music Store, please
refer to the Frequently Asked Questions or contact Customer Care.

Stay tuned! While the Yahoo! Music Unlimited Store will no longer be
available, Yahoo! Music has partnered with Rhapsody so you can still
purchase your favorite tracks. Plus, Yahoo! Music will continue to offer
users a complete online music experience with the largest collection of
music videos, Internet radio, exclusive artist features, music news, and
more!

Thank you for using Yahoo! Music.
