Mr.

Dear Mr.:

Thank you for contacting me in regard to H.R. 3261, commonly known as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). It is an honor to serve you in Congress, and I share your concerns and value your input.

On October 26, 2011, Representative Lamar Smith introduced H.R. 3261. This bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, of which I am not a member. Companion legislation in the Senate, S. 968, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (PROTECT-IP) was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy and currently awaits consideration by the full Senate.

Both of these bills would expand the federal government’s authority to track and prosecute websites unlawfully using intellectual property.

I oppose H.R. 3261 (SOPA) in its current form. Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have supported legislation that maintains the purity of the internet’s free market character, its free flow of commerce, services and communication, while minimizing the threat of theft of intellectual and real property to American companies.

Should this bill make it to the House floor for a vote, I will make sure to keep your thoughts in mind. It is an honor to serve you. Please feel free to contact me if I can assist you with further questions. If you would like to stay updated, please sign up for my E-newsletter and be sure to frequently visit my website for the latest news. You can also interact with me on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Thank you.

Sincerely,
B
