Important Message about the
Equifax Data Breach
As you have likely heard, the credit bureau Equifax suffered a data breach that has the potential to impact 143 million Americans. This breach occurred because of unauthorized access to Equifax’s systems, and was not in any way caused by unauthorized access to any of the Credit Union’s systems. While there is no way to know with certainty whether you are affected, you can take several steps to protect yourself.
- To help determine if your information may have been compromised, Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, which includes information about the breach, a search tool to determine if you may have been impacted, and the option to opt in to credit monitoring services offered by Equifax. You can also call Equifax at 866-447-7559 any day of the week, including weekends, from 4:00 am – 10:00 pm PT.
- Visit www.identitytheft.gov for resources on identity theft, freezing your credit report, and steps to take with the three different credit bureaus to dispute any unauthorized activity.
- If you experience fraud on your account, place a fraud alert with any of the three credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, or Trans Union – to alert potential creditors and lenders to take extra steps to identify you.
- Check your credit report for suspicious activity. Get a free copy of your credit report every year at www.annualcreditreport.com. If you find any unauthorized activity, notify the related financial institution or other agency immediately.
- Consider signing up for a service that routinely monitors your credit and protects your identity. Logix offers this type of service through Merchants Information Services, which also includes assistance with recovering your identity should it be stolen.
- Finally, consider activating two services available through Online Banking to further protect your account: Multi-Factor Authentication and Customizable Text and Email Alerts. Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication and receive a passcode alert to successfully log in each time an attempt is made to access your Online Banking account.

Jesse Gomez owner of Mercado restaurants is reported to be opening a new location in Pasadena, where Seco recently closed. This was previously the location Cafe 140 South and Crocodile Cafe. Apparently the Smith brothers gave it their best shot with this location and the remodels after each opening. It is sad to see the closing of Seco, but we look forward to Mercado opening, reportedly in early 2018.
More about Jesse Gomez and Executive Chef/Partner Jose Acevedo here.
Mercado would bring a modern Mexican option to Pasadena. With several locations around Los Angeles, this location would be a great fit offering diners on South Lake another option.

Apple iOS 11.0.1 update released Bug Fixes #ios11
This morning Apple appears to have released a patch to iOS 11 to resolve some bugs, perhaps the main one is the issue with Microsoft email services, in particular Exchange, Office 365.
Has anyone noticed and been annoyed when you launch Firefox or Chrome and a popup appears with a message that Firefox is slow, or Chrome uses battery, these may be subtle messages to some, but annoying to others.
Microsoft obviously wants users to use Edge, but this practice seems a little out of sorts. Maybe Firefox and Chrome could do the same thing when Edge is opened? But if they did, perhaps Microsoft would sue them…

Burbank Mayor Will Rogers Announces He Has Cancer
Will Reduce His Mayoral Obligations
Burbank, Calif. (September 20, 2017) – Burbank Mayor Will Rogers stated today that he has an aggressive form of liver cancer and his doctor has ordered him to reduce his Mayoral activities in order to receive treatment and rest.
At a press conference, Mayor Rogers announced, “It is with much regret that I must step back on my activities but my primary focus right now is to get well. While I will remain Mayor, I have asked Vice-Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy to help by fulfilling some of my official responsibilities. She has graciously accepted.”
Throughout his career as a journalist, while campaigning and in his capacity as a City Councilmember, Mayor Rogers has made it his highest priority to provide transparency and honesty. “I have repeatedly pledged to ensure that the community has access to the information it needs. I’ve tried to instill and encourage this culture throughout the city and I’m convinced this effort is succeeding.”
“Today is another example of openness. While I want to protect my privacy, I also feel that our community has a right to know why they will not see me as often at ribbon cuttings and community meetings.”
The entire City Council is standing by Rogers. “It is an extremely courageous act for our Mayor to share his personal challenge with all of us,” stated Vice-Mayor Gabel-Luddy. “I know that I speak for the full City Council when I say that we are in complete support of his efforts and look forward to continuing our work with him. Mayor Rogers provides Burbank with outstanding service and we know the community, along with Will’s friends and family, will be understanding and supportive. We wish him the best as he focuses on this challenge.”
Mayor Rogers has been diagnosed with stage 4 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. While most forms of hepatocellular carcinoma are thought to be related to hepatitis, Mayor Rogers has not been diagnosed with this disease. In his case a transplant along with traditional forms of chemotherapy have been ruled out. He is currently participating in drug trials and immuno-therapy.
More about Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer.

Almost daily, the media report incidents of malicious interference with computer systems, ranging from simple pranks, stealing personal data, industrial espionage, ransomware, and corrupting databases, all the way to disabling major utilities. There is clear demand for technologies that help detect, block, and recover from the effects all sorts of attacks. The October 2017 session of the Caltech Entrepreneurs Forum will be devoted to identifying entrepreneurial opportunities for providing tools to combat cyber threats. We will focus on market segments, what it takes to establish credibility as a small company, and what types of strategic alliances with larger companies can be used to overcome the challenges of starting and operating an emerging company capable of developing and selling leading edge security technology to large and potentially very conservative customers.
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Stan Stahl, president of Citadel Information Group and SecureTheVillage. Dr. Stahl’s cybersecurity career extends from his in-the-trenches security engineering work nearly 40 years ago to protect our nuclear missile arsenal to his community leadership today creating cybersecurity culture. Dr. Stahl will give us an overview of cybersecurity from the perspective of the need different classes of buyers have for new cybersecurity products and services. After his talk, we will turn to a panel of entrepreneurs in this burgeoning field who will report their varying experiences and approaches to financing, developing and selling cybersecurity products.
