Nissan LEAF $199 TCU Upgrade Too Little Too Late? @nissanleaf @nissanelectric

Nissan has sent out letters to owners of the Nissan LEAF 2011 to 2015 models equiped with TCU, that the service running on the AT&T 2G network is shutting down, and the services will stop working.

Many have had mixed experiences with the TCU service, Nissan even stated that the service would be free for a limited time, but has not starting charging for the service.

Now owners of models with TCU have to upgrade to retain the service beyond Dec 31, 2016.

Nissan sending out letters with a cost of $199 for owners of 2011 to 2014 models and that the upgrade is to 3G which is most like end of life network as well. Why would Nissan not upgrade the TCU to 4G?

What is the true cost to Nissan for this upgrade, perhaps $1000 if you include labor, apparently the upgrade takes about 2 hours, although or dealer stated 3-4 hours.  We will see how the service works after Dec 31 and after the upgrade.
