Revenue for Pasadena Police Tickets Citations

One thing that irritates me more with drivers on the road is when they are talking on their phone, it is illegal and I rarely see anyone getting pulled over for talking on the phone while driving. It would be interesting to see how many citations are issued for driving while talking on  the phone, as a matter of fact, I see at least a handful of people on my daily commute talking on the phone with the handset to their ear.

Which is the most fragrant violation of the use of phone while driving violation.

Another issue I see on my daily commute is drivers smoking cigarettes and tossing the ashes and whole lit cigarettes out the window. Not only is this polluting but affecting the air we breath and potentially a fire hazard with lit cigarettes.

Also there are people who drive around and toss trash out their window. Just yesterday I saw someone on the freeway throw out a soft drink cup. Not sure what make people thing the roads are a trash dump. But it is disturbing.

Microsoft Offers Credit for Your MacBook Apple Products Is it Fair

Microsoft is upping the competition now that it appears to have gained some momentum with the Surface line of products. Could this save Microsoft in the computer hardware business, perhaps.

To heat things up for the holiday season Microsoft is now offering credit up to $650 for your Apple products. But, are the credits fair? Can you sell your Apple product for more than what Microsoft is offering? Most likely yes.  For instance a late model MacBook will fetch you $75. These are selling on ebay for upwards of $150.

So for all the marketing that is being spent with advertising, this could turn out turn some back to their Apple products, unless they are so impressed with the Surface. I have used the Surface, and while I am still undecided, Apple’s new MacBook Pro line is a step in the right direction, lighter weight, higher resolution screens, faster processor. Windows 10 as a platform appears to have many hiccups when it comes to updates, and the number of updates. We can only hope that Microsoft will learn from user experiences and smooth out the updating process. I have seen several systems upgraded to Windows 10 and then  have to do updates that take over an hour to complete, while with Apple, the Sierra update too less than an hour for the whole update.

If you want to see what your Apple is worth if you are looking at a Surface, visit the website setup for the trade up program here.

Groupon Buying LivingSocial in Daily Deal Site Consolidation

Groupon Buying LivingSocial in Daily Deal Site Consolidation

Is this good or bad? It seems that investors believe it is a bad deal and to make matters worse Groupon reported a third quarter loss of $38 million.

Maybe I am one of those people who are suffering from daily deal fatigue, having gone through periods of buying deals being offered almost daily, now as I suspect many people are thinking twice about deals, especially those that are limited time offers.

Amazon had purchased LivingSocial as part of their entry into the daily deal space, investing $200 million and pegging the value of LivingSocial at over $1 billion.

Groupon must have picked up LivingSocial for between $100 and $200 million, we should see it reported in the filings as they are released.

DeVry University & Department of Education Reach Resolution

DeVry University & Department of Education Reach Resolution

Dear Victor,

I am pleased to share that DeVry University reached a resolution with the U.S. Department of Education (“the Department”) regarding the limitations action initiated in January 2016, which focused on our graduate employment records for the period 1975 to 1980, and their use in advertisements. While we believed in good faith DeVry University had sufficient substantiation at the time these ads ran, we agreed to a settlement to keep our resources and our people focused on our purpose… empowering students to achieve their educational and career goals.

I would like to highlight several key points related to the settlement:

  • At no time has the Department challenged the value of a DeVry University education or its academic quality, nor did it accuse the university of any fraudulent acts. The matter came down to a disagreement about how the “since 1975” employment statistic was substantiated. DeVry University remains accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC is a regional agency that accredits U.S. colleges and universities at the institutional level; and is recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • The Department and DeVry University have come to an agreement regarding the “since 1975” representation. The Department maintained that DeVry University needed student-level employment data for the years 1975-1980, as well as Career Services manuals through 1983, to substantiate the ads. DeVry University had campus-level employment data through October 1980, and had student-level data from October 1980 forward, and Career Services manuals from 1983 onward. As such, DeVry University agreed to no longer use “since 1975” representation.
  • This resolution will not hinder our ability to provide federal financial aid funding to current or future students. DeVry University is able to continue to participate in Title IV programs. We will be subject to provisional certification and must post a letter of credit. Provisional certification is a heightened form of monitoring by the Department.

On behalf of DeVry University, I thank you for your continued support of your alma mater. We are honored to help our students unlock their potential, change their lives for the better, and improve the world around us, just as you are doing today.

Sincerely,

Robert Paul
President
DeVry University

Grand Marshals

Luis J. Rodriguez, Grand Marshal

FINAL Lat Heritage Flyer 2015For over 40 years, Luis J. Rodriguez has been a leader for justice, clean environment, economic equity, and peace at home and in the world. In 1970, he was arrested during the largest peace protest in a community of color at the time, the Chicano Moratorium Against the Vietnam War, and held in murderer’s row of the Hall of Justice jail. Eventually released, Luis was politically transformed from the experience and left a life of crime, drugs and gangs by age 20. To stay out of trouble, Luis worked at Bethlehem Steel, National Lead, St. Regis Paper Company, as well as in construction and a chemical refinery. However, most of U.S. industry was being wiped out by the 1980s.

Luis then became a reporter/photographer for weekly East L.A. newspapers; a daily newspaper in San Bernardino; public radio; and a freelancer. In the early 80s, Luis covered the Contra War in Nicaragua and Honduras as well as indigenous uprisings in Mexico. Luis also worked for the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO) in the largest union representation election in U.S. history at the time.

In 1985, he moved to Chicago where he edited and wrote for weekly political newspapers, local publications, and in news radio. He also worked with gang and non-gang youth in Chicago during its most violent period. He has long advocated against the imprisonment of the poor and working class in the U.S. and for restorative justice. In addition, he became active in the thriving Chicago poetry scene, birthplace of Slam Poetry, and founded Tia Chucha Press, now a renowned cross-cultural small press.

Returning to Los Angeles in 2000, Luis and his wife Trini helped create Tia Chucha’s Cultural Center & Bookstore in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

In 2012 Luis became vice-presidential candidate for the U.S. Justice Party with Rocky Anderson for president. In 2014, he ran for California governor, endorsed by the Green Party, Mexican American Political Association, and Justice Party, among others.

Today Luis is Poet Laureate of Los Angeles with 15 books in poetry, children’s literature, fiction, and nonfiction, including the bestselling memoir “Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.” His last memoir is “It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing,” became a finalist for a 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award. His last poetry book is “Borrowed Bones” released in 2016 by Curbstone Books/Northwestern University Press.

Serafin Espinoza, Community Grand Marshal

FINAL Lat Heritage Flyer 2015Mr. Espinoza is a retired Civil Service professional with 40 years of social work experience. He has knowledge of principles and methods of planning, developing and implementing a variety of human social services programs and practices.

One of his major accomplishments was to assist the City of Pasadena, both politically and as a clinician, to adopt a city policy on children, youth, and families. Mr. Espinoza uses an approach which is both psychosocial and spiritual, and is an experiences coordinator and supervisor of both volunteers and service providers.

Mr. Espinoza has experience with a range of modalities and interventions to serve families, youth and the community in a comprehensive way. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a MSW, and California State University Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s degree in social work.

Now it is official that Granville Cafe is coming to this location. With Urban Plates recently opening across the street there will be many choices for places to dine.

Panoramio no longer available after November 4, 2016

Back in 2014, we announced our intention to retire Panoramio in order to invest our efforts into improving photo-sharing experiences directly inside Google Maps.  In response to your feedback, we postponed these plans and worked to add features to Maps that better support the level of engagement that you have enjoyed with Panoramio. Today, with photo upload tools in Google Maps and our Local Guides program, we are providing easy options for you to share your photos with an active and growing community. As such, we’ve decided to now close down Panoramio. To make this transition easier, we’ll provide several options to continue sharing photos through other services. If you choose, you can also export all your data and take it somewhere else.

If you link your Panoramio profile with a Google account, all your Panoramio photos will be copied to the Google Album Archive at full resolution after Panoramio goes away. These copied photos will not use any of your Google storage quota.  You can visit your Panoramio profile to see what photos you’ve added.

You must link your Panoramio profile with a Google account for your photos to be automatically copied.  Your account is not currently linked with a Google account.  If you do not link your account, then your photos will be lost after Panoramio is retired in November 2017.   In addition, for your Panoramio photos to keep appearing in Google Maps, after creating your Google account, you must also upgrade to a Google+ account.

After November 4, 2016, you’ll continue to have access to your photos in Panoramio for a year, but you will no longer be able to add new photos, likes, or comments.  Below, we’ve included resources to help you manage or export your data.

1) Keep your photos in Album Archive

If you link your Panoramio profile with a Google account, we will automatically copy your Panoramio photos to the Google Album Archive when Panoramio is retired in October 2017.

  • You must link your profile before November 2017 for this to occur.
  • Copied photos will not use any of your Google storage quota.
  • If you link your profile with a Google+ account, then eligible images and your View Counts will be transferred into Google Maps and will be visible when you sign in to Maps and access the Contributions screen from the main menu.

2) Export your photos to a local zip file

  1. Sign in to www.panoramio.com
  2. Go to your account’s settings page
  3. Click the “Get photos” button under the Data Liberation heading

3) Become a Local Guide to keep contributing

To keep adding photos to Google Maps and engage with a growing community of photographers, join the Local Guides program. You can earn points and unlock rewards for photos submitted with a Google account when they are linked to a point of interest or business. Many of your Panoramio photos may already be counted.

If you prefer to no longer share your photos with Google Maps, you can delete your Panoramio photos or your entire account at any time.

  • If you don’t link your Panoramio account with a Google account, your Panoramio account will be deleted automatically when Panoramio is retired after November 2017.
  • You can also choose to delete your Panoramio account (and photos) immediately by logging in, opening “Settings“, and clicking the “Delete your account” option.  You can also navigate to this page directly by using this link.
  • If you delete any photos (or delete your entire account) before Panoramio is retired in November 2017, that content will not be automatically copied to the Google Album Archive and will immediately stop appearing in Google Maps.

Please see our Help Center article for more information and the various options you have to save, transfer, or delete your content. We’ve appreciated your contributions over the years and hope you will continue to share amazing photos with the world.

Thank you,

The Panoramio team
