Nissan LEAF Problems Continue, Your LEAF Can Be Hacked #leafhack @NissanElectric

Nissan LEAF hacked.

If the whole debacle over the battery capacity of the Nissan LEAF was not enough, now comes word that the Nissan LEAF can be hacked.

Apparently the companion app is not secure, allowing anyone with basic hacking skills to scan and retrieve user account and password and then  control the LEAF. Including turning on and off the AC and downloading trip information.

This seems like a serious issue for Nissan and should be dealt with immediately.

Here’s more info details on the vulnerability form Security Experts.

Porto’s Bakery & Cafe Orange County Location Fourth in So Cal Opens Fall 2016

Fall of 2016, Porto’s Bakery and Cafe will be bringing their world-famous pastries, sandwiches and specialty beverages to Buena Park. Named the 2015 Best Restaurant in the United States by Yelp, the family owned and operated Cuban bakery will soon open their first location in Orange County. This will be their fourth location in Southern California and it promises to be the biggest and best one yet.

The bakery’s delicious desserts are complemented only by an even richer history that began when the Porto family moved from their home in Manzanillo, Cuba to California in the 1960’s. Shortly after arriving in the United States, Rosa Porto began to sell her pastries out of a small 300 square foot location in Los Angeles. The bakery was an instant success that would eventually lead the family to open locations in Glendale, Burbank and Downey.

Parking Lot to Avoid in Old Pasadena @oldpasadena #parkingfail @LAZParking

Parking in Old Pasadena can be challenging, but when the privately run lots like the One Colorado parking lot at Union and Fair Oaks and Exchange Alley resort to deceptive tactics, you know it is bad. Reading the numerous reviews on Yelp which include mention of the parking rates at the One Colorado lot is enough to confirm our experience this morning with this lot.

This morning we decided to go with some friends to Russell’s for breakfast. We arrived around 9am, put or name in and walked over to the Sunday Farmer’s Market for 15-20 minutes and then our table was ready.

We had a wonderful breakfast as usual, the problem started when we returned to the car to exit.

There was a person at the exit having issues, for at least 10 minutes, which held us up from getting out, the it was our turn to exit.  The security guard took our ticket inserted into the machine, and then asked us to pay $8!  Yep, we had a 90 minute validation and barely went over the 90 minutes, and the security guard asked us to pay the full rate, because as she stated on weekends it is a flat rate, doesn’t matter if you have validation.

Jon Hamblen is the relatively new director of parking for the City of Pasadena. jhamblen@cityofpasadena.net
He has expressed the desire to hear from people with complaints. I doubt he can help with
the private lots, but city lots are in his purview.

The parking company operating this lot appears to be LAZ Parking.

What kind of con game are these people running, so we asked for the manager, someone who claimed to be the manager came over, and basically said, that is the way it is, we are on private property, and that we have to pay.  So our friends got really upset. Basically refusing to pay, but that didn’t help. We asked for their names and cards, and got that info. and will be taking it up with them, and this posting will be updated.

You can clearly see that the posted Parking Rates on the Exchange Alley entrance. Each 30 minutes $2, Daily Maximum $8.  Validated Parking 90 minutes.

OneColoradoParkingSignsOldPasadenapic2

OneColoradoParkingSignsOldPasadenapic1

The fact that they attempt to charge different rates from what is posted is deceptive and illegal and they should be sued for these tactics.

They person in charge us rude and the “security” people are even less helpful.

Stay away from the One Colorado Parking Lot.   Your best bet is to park at the City of Pasadena owned lots, with rates of 90 minutes free, no validation needed, and $2 per hour after, up to $6 max.

Best options for Parking in Old Pasadena:

Update 2/23/16: Message from LAZ Parking on facebook:

Hi Victor- we appreciate you reaching out. We have looked into this issue with the manager of the location and have identified the issue. It has since been corrected as the validator was actually replaced by our vendor yesterday.

It sounds like the security guard believing the flat rate was in effect is a result of the rate structure changing this month 2/1. Whereas previously the weekends and evenings had a $6 flat rate, now the charge of $2 every 30 Minutes to a max of $8 is in effect at all times. The $8 charge the machine was asking for was a result of the Russell’s validator not registering and the machine believing you had been in the lot for 1 hour and a half plus. The signage is correct. Does this make sense?

Given that this was a result of our equipment malfunctioning we would like to refund the amount paid with our sincere apologies.

If you could please send me your contact information- email address & phone number- we will have a Manager reach out to you directly and make sure you are fully refunding.

Thank you!

Can Apple Crack The San Bernardino Terrorists iPhone?

Can Apple Crack The San Bernardino Terrorists iPhone

Google CEO Sundar Pichai stands behind Apple on the topic of privacy, although it doesn’t go as far as Apple has in defying the court order.

Can Apple hack the phone? Or a better question, why is it the FBI cannot hack the phone? They have tried 10 times on the passwords, and now it sits with one more attempt before the data is erased.

Are there hackers out there who could get around this password security. Chances are that the NSA and CIA could put their resources on this and crack the phone, but it appears that the FBI is position itself as the lead agency in this case, to make a statement, without truly understand the full implications of make one exception and putting the crack team at Apple on the case of cracking this one phone in the name of national security.

Once the code / key is created you can’t just delete it.  Is there a chance the NSA CIA are putting the FBI to test public reaction to such a case.

Apple Defies Judge’s Order in San Bernardino Terrorist Investigation

Apple Defies Judge’s Order in San Bernardino Terrorist Case

Apple’s Tim Cook has done what many believe is the right move to protect the privacy of people.

The FBI wants Apple to build a key unlock for the iOS system, which would ideally allow the “government” to access the data on your phone, but not limited to access to other devices.

How has Apple cooperated with the investigation. Well it appears that the Apple iPhone 5c used by the terrorist in San Bernardino had a passcode lock. After so many attempts the data could be erased.

The FBI has made 10 attempts to unlock the phone and has failed. Further attempts could erase all the data.  Has the FBI tried to lock into computer systems used by the terrorists? Some reports had the hard drives used by the terrorists dumped into a local lake.

This is the letter posted by Apple’s CEO  Tim Cook:

February 16, 2016 A Message to Our Customers

The United States government has demanded that Apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers. We oppose this order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand.

This moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake.

The Need for Encryption

Smartphones, led by iPhone, have become an essential part of our lives. People use them to store an incredible amount of personal information, from our private conversations to our photos, our music, our notes, our calendars and contacts, our financial information and health data, even where we have been and where we are going.

All that information needs to be protected from hackers and criminals who want to access it, steal it, and use it without our knowledge or permission. Customers expect Apple and other technology companies to do everything in our power to protect their personal information, and at Apple we are deeply committed to safeguarding their data.

Compromising the security of our personal information can ultimately put our personal safety at risk. That is why encryption has become so important to all of us.

For many years, we have used encryption to protect our customers’ personal data because we believe it’s the only way to keep their information safe. We have even put that data out of our own reach, because we believe the contents of your iPhone are none of our business.

The San Bernardino Case

We were shocked and outraged by the deadly act of terrorism in San Bernardino last December. We mourn the loss of life and want justice for all those whose lives were affected. The FBI asked us for help in the days following the attack, and we have worked hard to support the government’s efforts to solve this horrible crime. We have no sympathy for terrorists.

When the FBI has requested data that’s in our possession, we have provided it. Apple complies with valid subpoenas and search warrants, as we have in the San Bernardino case. We have also made Apple engineers available to advise the FBI, and we’ve offered our best ideas on a number of investigative options at their disposal.

We have great respect for the professionals at the FBI, and we believe their intentions are good. Up to this point, we have done everything that is both within our power and within the law to help them. But now the U.S. government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create. They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone.

Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software — which does not exist today — would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone’s physical possession.

The FBI may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control.

The Threat to Data Security

Some would argue that building a backdoor for just one iPhone is a simple, clean-cut solution. But it ignores both the basics of digital security and the significance of what the government is demanding in this case.

In today’s digital world, the “key” to an encrypted system is a piece of information that unlocks the data, and it is only as secure as the protections around it. Once the information is known, or a way to bypass the code is revealed, the encryption can be defeated by anyone with that knowledge.

The government suggests this tool could only be used once, on one phone. But that’s simply not true. Once created, the technique could be used over and over again, on any number of devices. In the physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks — from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.

The government is asking Apple to hack our own users and undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers — including tens of millions of American citizens — from sophisticated hackers and cybercriminals. The same engineers who built strong encryption into the iPhone to protect our users would, ironically, be ordered to weaken those protections and make our users less safe.

We can find no precedent for an American company being forced to expose its customers to a greater risk of attack. For years, cryptologists and national security experts have been warning against weakening encryption. Doing so would hurt only the well-meaning and law-abiding citizens who rely on companies like Apple to protect their data. Criminals and bad actors will still encrypt, using tools that are readily available to them.

A Dangerous Precedent

Rather than asking for legislative action through Congress, the FBI is proposing an unprecedented use of the All Writs Act of 1789 to justify an expansion of its authority.

The government would have us remove security features and add new capabilities to the operating system, allowing a passcode to be input electronically. This would make it easier to unlock an iPhone by “brute force,” trying thousands or millions of combinations with the speed of a modern computer.

The implications of the government’s demands are chilling. If the government can use the All Writs Act to make it easier to unlock your iPhone, it would have the power to reach into anyone’s device to capture their data. The government could extend this breach of privacy and demand that Apple build surveillance software to intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone’s microphone or camera without your knowledge.

Opposing this order is not something we take lightly. We feel we must speak up in the face of what we see as an overreach by the U.S. government.

We are challenging the FBI’s demands with the deepest respect for American democracy and a love of our country. We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications.

While we believe the FBI’s intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products. And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect.

Chef Roy Elam, Plant Food and Wine
– Los Angeles based chef Roy Elam grew up just outside of Saint Louis, MO in the cornfields of Illinois. Home cooked meals, summers on his grandma’s farm in southern Ohio, travels as a touring musician, and life in San Diego and just outside of Portland, OR all shaped his culinary vision. Now, his endless drive to continue learning and commitment to local farms and heirloom ingredients bring a fresh, vibrant, and unique flavor to the dishes he creates. As the former head chef of SunCafe in Studio City, CA his cast iron mac and cheese won accolades as “the best vegan mac and cheese ever” by Huffington Post.

Plant Food for People

Chef Michael Falso, The Springs
– Michael Falso is an award winning and classically trained chef that currently is the Executive Chef of The Springs, a raw and vegan restaurant, juice bar, wellness center, and yoga studio in DTLA’s Arts District. While raw food is primarily Michael’s favorite style of food, he also enjoys actually cooking his food as well. Michael is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and has worked in some of the top kitchen in New York–however, raw food is Michael’s favorite style of food because while it appears to be so restrictive, it also allows him to be the most creative. He also wants people to see that his food is playful and innovative, while at the same time has the added benefit of being healthy. In a lot of ways his food is stealth nutrition.

Chef Mollie Engelhart, Sage Organic Vegan Bistro
– Mollie was raised vegan on a small farm in upstate New York. Her upbringing inspired a love for gardening, foodscaping, and cooking. In addition to her affection for food and cooking, she is extremely passionate about animals and the environment. Locally sustained and produced food is Mollie’s passion. She has a select group of farmers that she works closely with ensuring the highest quality produce in all of her dishes. Mollie’s commitment to the integrity of food goes far beyond taste and commerce to what is ultimately best for the planet.

Chef Rosanna Caira, The Rabbit Hole Cafe
-Driven by curiosity and wonder about the food we eat, where it comes from, how it affects our bodies and the world around us, Rosanna began a journey and went on a creative adventure down the Rabbit Hole.
