LOS ANGELES, CA – The Skirball Cultural Center announces details for its fifth “Into the Night” party, a late-night immersive experiencethat combines performances, hands-on activities, and after-dark access to the Skirball Museum galleries. Taking place on Friday, December 6, at 8:30 p.m., Into the Night: Progression continues in this tradition with live music from Avi Buffalo, the Los Angeles debut of the performance troupe People Get Ready, an exclusive dance performance by Jmy James Kidd and the Sunland Dancers, an architectural scavenger hunt, specialty cocktails, and more.
Into the Night: Progression celebrates the recent completion of the Skirball’s idyllic fifteen-acre campus in the Santa Monica Mountains. Guests will experience the Skirball’s distinctive architecture at this site-wide progressive party, which will move from one venue to the next, including the first-ever performance in the Skirball’s recently unveiled, 9,000-square-foot Guerin Pavilion and after-hours access to the new exhibition Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie.
The evening features a live performance by Long Beach locals Avi Buffalo, who was once just a kid named Avi (short for Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg) with a special bent for composing lovely pop songs. He spent the mid-2000s recording quiet yet resolutely sophisticated songs on whatever free software he could install on his PC. When Avi Buffalo developed into a full band, they colonized L.A.’s Eastside music scene. After one of their first recorded songs, “What’s In It For?” was posted on MySpace, esteemed indie label Sub Pop came calling. Soon after, they released their debut eponymous album. Avi Buffalo are currently preparing to release a second full-length album in 2014, and their performance at Into the Night: Progression will be one of the first opportunities to hear this new material.
Into the Night: Progression also includes the highly anticipated L.A. debut of People Get Ready, the Brooklyn-based foursome who combine harmony-rich pop with performance art. At the Skirball, they will perform their critically hailed live show Specific Ocean, in which even the flooring and the microphone cables become part of the choreography. The dance troupe/rock band, comprised of dancer and guitarist Steven Reker, Luke Fasano (ex-Yeasayer), James Rickman (ex-Lizzie Trulie, ex-Slow Gherkin), and Jen Goma (A Sunny Day in Glasgow), released their self-titled debut album in late 2012. David Byrne, with whom Reker joined on tour as a dancer and guitarist in 2009–2010, lauded, “[People Get Ready] integrate dance, movement, performance, music and singing in a way I haven’t seen before, and it’s very promising. It is something I’ve been trying to do in recent years as well, and [they] are taking it to places I haven’t seen before.” After the troupe’s show at New York Live Arts, NPR Music’s Bob Boilen was compelled to crown People Get Ready’s Specific Ocean the #1 live show on his list of 243 Favorite Concerts of 2012.
Guests at Into the Night: Progression will also have the chance to witness an exclusive dance performance by Jmy James Kidd, a self-taught choreographic and costume designer classically trained in ballet and modern dance. Kidd’s choreographic work has been commissioned by REDCAT, Creative Time, Honor Fraser Gallery, MIT, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and The Kitchen. She is a founding member of NICK+JAMES, MGM Grand, AUNTS, and CLASSCLASSCLASS, and she is co-founder of Pieter Performance Space in Lincoln Heights.
