Another Day and Another Media Temple Outage @mediatemple

Several hours later and sites are still experiencing troubles hosted on Media Temple services.
#1973 – Web and Email service interruption
(mt) Engineers are reaching a resolution. Until the final fix is in place some customers will see interruptions to Web, Mail, and FTP services. This is a temporary condition and is only affecting some users who are using (mt) Media Temple DNS Nameservers. Customers using 3rd party DNS Nameservers will see no effect. There is not a firm ETA yet for the final fix. Watch this status blog for further updates.

Please be advised that the (mt) Media Temple Support phone line is now near it’s max and some customers will hear busy signals when calling in for support. If you are calling in regarding an interruption in Web, Email or FTP services please know that (mt) Engineers are approaching a fix and that this is a temporary network issue affecting (mt) Media Temple DNS Nameservers.

An ETA on the final fix is pending. Watch this status page for fresh information.

———————————-

note that one thing that is interesting that some picked up on pretty quick, is that it was a nameserver dns issue.

Apparently if you host your DNS with another provider, such as Google you are ok.

I’ll have to look into that, but usually I expect the hosting company to have multiple redundant DNS/Name Servers to handle any possible DNS issues.

Apparently the whole cluster of servers was taken out? or offline? No explanation has been given yet.

Are you looking for a new host?

Update: I have been impressed with the follow-up on this post from several Media Temple employees/executives. I really want to find a way to make my hosting pleasurable at Media Temple. Support is usually good, but as with most companies that have grown rapidly, they rarely are prepared for major problems, that cause users to call in, phone lines jam, emails get bounced. Support/Customer service is something that is a heavy cost on companies financially.

Update 2: I have not heard back from Andrew Won – VP of Customer Service.

————————————————————————————————-

Regarding the Overage Charges, this is the email I received, so we will see what is projected and what I am actually charged. Is anyone else puzzled as to why they receive an email with one estimate and then are charged much much higher. I am waiting to speak to Andrew Won with MediaTemple regarding this and other issues, and will see how it works out.  Three things a company can do to really piss off customers, have a lousy service, bad customer service and charge customers for something they are not expecting.  MediaTemple has displayed that they can deliver on the above, but I have hope they can turn things around. I know there are many people very upset with MediaTemple and have moved their sites to other hosting companies, and yes there are other hosting companies in the Los Angeles area, so you can keep supporting local companies if you like to do that like me.  One company is CoolHandle which has some pretty attractive packages. I’m thinking of trying them out, and will report how I like them.
