Norman’s Ark at the Ford Theater

Last night we went to the Ford Theater to see the opening of Norman’s Ark.

Before the performance we attended the reception sponsored by Target. Target is a major donor to the arts in communities.

The performance was fantastic. The lighting and choreography was well done.

Norman’s Ark at The Ford Theater

MIRACLES HAPPEN WHILE YOU’RE WAITING FOR HELP TO COME

Norman’s Ark is a musical about hope, family and the power of love. The project was conceived as a response to the increase in disastrous floods affecting our planet, but will have a greater impact and a deeper significance in light of the tragic events of Hurricane Katrina.

This original musical tells of the journey of one man and his family in the face of disaster, of the passions and fears that define the family unit (and by association, all of us) and of the understanding of what is really important in life – love, tolerance and appreciation of one another.

Set in the torrential floods of present-day Midwest, Norman’s Ark is a contemporary retelling of the Noah’s Ark story. In this version, Norman Coopersmith and his family have climbed up on their roof as the water has begun to rise in their home. To calm their fears, Norman begins to tell his loved ones about a flood that occurred a million years ago…but with a very modern point of view.

Norman’s Ark is meant to entertain, inspire, and encourage children and adults alike. It is filled with songs, most of which are in the country rock tradition, performed by the multi-racial Coopersmith family and rousing gospel numbers performed by a mass compilation of various gospel choirs. One hundred multi-racial children from all over the greater Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley areas will also participate; bringing to life the adorable dancing animals on the ark, the thundering storm, and the doves of peace and hope.

Just as the Christmas season and the Easter season each have their traditional shows which families attend over and over, THE FESTIVAL OF NEW AMERICAN MUSICALS LA FESTIVAL.ORG is kicking off the Summer Season at THE FORD AMPHITHEATRE FORD AMPITHEATRE.ORG with a timeless show that will delight and unite families year after year.

Solar Powered iPhone – iPod

Several reports are coming in that Apple is working on solar powered versions of the iPhone and iPod. Apparently the patent filing shows the power coming from cells on the screen area.

With new technology in solar cells using plastics, the whole case can be made of photovoltaic materials.

I also like the idea of the crank device that would power the battery.

Way to go Apple! This is a big move in green tech.

Subject: First look at the Twiistup 4 Showoffs

We received more than 100 applications from companies in Southern California and beyond to “showoff” their products at Twiistup 4. Keeping with Twiistup tradition, we were going to select ten local start-ups. Due to the overwhelming interest, we expanded the list of featured companies to 11, including seven of Southern California’s best and brightest and four ‘crashers’ from Texas, Vancouver and the Bay Area.

Criteria focused on six core strengths: business model; experience of the executive team; technological advantages and innovation; sector focus; funding status; and competitive environment. The showoff finalists cover a broad range of technology’s hottest sectors and industries, including advertising, media, music, social networking and video. One of the showoffs will be chosen ‘Best of Event Showoff’ by popular vote.

The judging panel, responsible for choosing the showoffs, included, Pete Cashmore of Mashable, Frank Addante from Rubicon Project, Mark Suster of GRP Partners, Andy Oliver from Lewis PR Inc., Krisztina “Z” Holly, Vice Provost for Innovation at the University of Southern California and executive director for the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation and Mike Macadaan, Twiistup Founder.

We want to thank all the companies that applied and to our sponsors, Adisn, AOL Developer Network, USC Stevens Institute of Innovation, Rubicon Project, ThisNext, Userplane, Mail Room Fund, Chi.mp, Heavybag Media, Qtask and Media Temple for making this the biggest Twiistup yet. (link love below)

200′ behind trucks?? No liability?

Is there a law regarding trucks placing signs on the back with
“Not responsible for damage to your car, stay 200′ back”

Lately I have been noticing more trucks with this sort of sign on their lift gates.
Is it legal?
Does it release them of liability?
How did they get the idea that placing a sign makes it ok to drop dirt, rocks, and other matter from their trucks?

These are questions I am working on getting answers to. So stay tuned.

Pick Cherries in Southern California

Hi Cherry Pickers,

The cherries are sweet and ripe and Gary is ready at the ranch so, we are opening for picking tomorrow–Saturday, May 24th. We will be open all weekend–the 24th, 25th and 26th. The weather has cooled off so it should be great cherry picking weather! It is still a great idea to put on your sunscreen and wear a hat. It can warm up quickly. I’d also suggest throwing a sweater in the car in case it is a little cool.

We just posted the new pictures of the cherries on the web site, www.upickcherries.com. About 1000 of the trees are super ripe and the rest are coming along. We have lots of local raw honey too!

If you can’t come this weekend, we will be open from 8am to 6pm every day from May 31st thru the 4th of July weekend. Don’t forget we have 25 acres so we love large groups. With 25 or more people from your charity or church, we are happy to donate 10% or your purchases back to the charity right on the spot. Ask us for details when you come to the orchard.

Any other questions, feel free to email me any time. Our cherry hotline also has details of our day and time openings. Our cherry hotline number is 661 270-1356.

Be ready for some great cherries and great fun! See you at the ranch!

You may already know us. Since 2001, as Organic Bouquet, we’ve been offering sustainably grown flowers fresh from our partner farms. In fact, we’ve played a key role in the transformation of the floral industry by promoting and living up to the highest social and environmental standards—developing the most eco-friendly floral packaging, initiating the industry’s first carbon offset program, and growing our flowers in a way that is gentle on the earth and that safeguards the ecology and the well-being of wildlife and farm workers.

As Organic Style, we remain equally committed to our environmental and humanitarian values, carefully selecting our sources, sustainably producing our products, and donating a portion of our proceeds to dedicated charitable organizations. Only now we’ve expanded our offerings, so that you can be true to your values in more areas of your life. Now that you’re here, explore our eco-boutique. You’ll find everything from gifts for pets to eco-chic apparel to gourmet gifts to bedding for the green home—and everything’s sustainably produced, so you can take comfort in knowing that your choices are contributing to a better world.

Always aiming high

We’ve chosen to take the high road in everything we do, from our relationships with our partner artisans and growers to our adherence to rigorous U.S. and international sustainability standards. We obtain our products from companies who provide safe and just working conditions and a livable wage, and partner with artisans and farmers who re-invest in their communities and take pride in their craftsmanship. And in an effort to create online connections and community, we share their stories. All our products are produced without animal testing or cruelty and are either vegetarian or vegan. We’re a member of CO-OP America, the premier green business network in the United States.

Our responsible commerce includes:

* Contributing a portion of our proceeds to charitable organizations dedicated to supporting social and environmental causes. To date, we have donated more than $250,000 to our charitable partners.

* Meeting the highest social and environmental product standards set forth by the following certifying agencies: USDA certified Organic, Veriflora certified sustainable, Demeter certified Biodynamic, Fair Trade, Smart Certified, and Green-e.

* Employing eco-friendly practices whenever possible, by using recycled, recyclable, tree-free, biodegradable, compostable, post-consumer, wild-crafted, and/or all-natural materials, printing with vegetable-based inks, and using carbon offsets, renewable or efficient energy, and minimal toxic chemicals.

At Organic Style, you’ll enjoy eco-luxury at eco-nomical prices. We want our environmentally and socially responsible products to be affordable–for everyone. That’s another way we’re making a difference.
